There are more kinds of pearls than the classic, white, lustrous gem, which is how the South Sea pearl is described. The Tahitian Natural Color Black pearl was introduced to one of the leading jewelers in New York in 1976, when Salvador Assael returned from his pearl farms in Tahiti with a set of exquisite black pearls. He created the perfect black necklace, which he had done so many times before except with white pearls, and then went to his old friend, the legendary Fifth Avenue jeweler, Harry Winston, and challenged him to sell the necklace. The deal was made, the necklace was sold, and Salvador J. Assael had introduced a new gem to the world market.
